West Ham’s loss to Fulham in the Carabao Cup was a stark reminder of what lies ahead in east London in the not too distant future.
Although the manner of the loss was nothing to be ashamed or worried about, considering the squad rotation and resting of certain players.
The team spirit also is very much noted, with the players never giving in despite going behind on three occasions. However, there was a reminder of how unforgiving Premier League football can be.
All three goals conceded by Nuno’s Hammers were self inflicted, by lapses in concentration which ultimately Fulham punished us for.
That is the reality of the top flight and ultimately why we are in the Championship.
West Ham can certainly continue to look forward and up when it comes to this season in the Championship, with a chance this weekend of cementing ourselves at top of the league when we head to south London to face Millwall.
Should we be victorious against our bitter rivals, it will mean an international break sitting on the summit.
However, the loss to Fulham is a warning that should promotion be achieved this season, there is still plenty of work to be done.
