West Ham play Millwall for the first time in over fourteen years on Saturday.
This is a massive game for both teams; both of us want the bragging rights over the other because it could well be another 14 years without playing each other after this season.
I don’t want to get into the Spurs fan type arguments about whose cup final it is, but it probably is bigger for Millwall because they haven’t had many big occasions like this one.
West Ham have had huge European finals and semi-finals in recent years, and other derbies against the likes of Tottenham and Chelsea. The biggest games Millwall have had in the last fourteen years are probably Championship play-off semi-finals.
So, it probably is slightly more Millwall’s ‘Cup Final’ than it is ours, but this and the return fixture are almost certainly the ones both of us want to win the most this season.
I don’t think it will come down to who wants it more, as a lot of people have been saying. I think both teams will want it as much as each other; it will simply come down to who plays better on the day, and hopefully, with the level of squad we have, that should be us.
I’m sure whoever wins will be rubbing it in the other’s face, and whoever loses will be making excuses. Let’s hope it’s the Lions fans who are doing the latter come Saturday evening.
Come On You Irons!
