Somehow, Maxwel Cornet is still at West Ham.

And somehow, there are still fans that believe he should be given another chance under Nuno Espírito Santo. Mind you, the number of Hammers fans of that opinion has greatly diminished in recent seasons.

In his four years (FOUR YEARS) at West Ham, Cornet has done very little to prove he deserves another opportunity, even in the Championship. And with him turning 30 years old on Sunday, it’s difficult to see what he could offer Nuno’s side.

Currently, the former Burnley man wouldn’t get in the team ahead of Josh Ajala, nevermind Manor Solomon or Edvin Austbo.

Whatever about his time at West Ham, what is most worrying is how he has failed anywhere he has played since his 2022 move to Stratford. Many talented players have struggled in East London, but to not make a good impression for multiple clubs since, there is only one common denominator.

Multiple times I have written about how it is a shame really, how Cornet comes across as a nice guy, how he was unlucky with injury and how different things could have been had that goal at Stamford Bridge four years ago stood.

But there can be no more excuses. He hasn’t shown enough under four different managers – more if you count loan spells – and he simply has to be taken off the books.

I think the chant of the West Ham fans during their pre-season game with Stevenage in July sums up the whole situation most accurately: “Maxwel Cornet, we thought you were dead”.

In truth, I think his football career may be dead. It is at West Ham at least. I sincerely hope the club reach an agreement to mutually terminate his contract and that he revives his career elsewhere, but there is no way the Irons should give the winger “another chance” – and I think there is practically no chance they will.
