West Ham are planning to offer midfielder Mohamadou Kante a new and improved contract, according to The Athletic.
The 20-year-old, who signed from Paris FC, has been a revelation for us so far this season in the Championship, and the club wants to reward him for his growing importance to the first team.
The Frenchman, who is also eligible for Senegal, currently has a contract that runs to 2031, so I would imagine a new deal would be another year or two on top of that.
Seeing how important Kante has become to us and what an asset he already is and could become is crazy. Also, the fact Julen Lopetegui didn’t want the midfielder when Tim Steidten brought him to his attention shows just how bad the Spaniard was in East London.
Steidten and the club went ahead with the deal anyway, which reportedly cost around £400,000. A real bargain, one of just a few good signings the German made during his time at the London Stadium.
With five years left on his contract, a new one doesn’t need to be a priority right now, but he’s probably on a youth player’s wage. Capology says he’s on around £3,000 a week.
Obviously, a sum of money most people reading this would love, but in terms of footballers’ wages, his role within the team, and his potential, he does deserve a new contract.
There is every chance Kante’s new deal could decuple the rumoured weekly wage he’s currently on to get in line with the likes of Magassa, Austbo, Piroe, Morato, and Pablo.
