West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez has made one appearance for West Ham so far this season.

When it seemed like Edson Alvarez was going to stick around just before the season started, a lot of Hammers fans were excited. A former Champions League star, captain of the Mexico National team, was going to be playing for us in the Championship.

He started the first game of the season, the first round of the Carabao Cup against Portsmouth. He looked okay; he didn’t set the world alight, but he didn’t have a pre-season with us.

It did leave a lot of us excited to have a player of his level and experience in the second tier. However, for whatever reason, we haven’t seen him since then.

There were rumours Real Sociedad and Ajax were in for him; however, it seemed like it was only on loan. I assume Alvarez wanted one of those deals to go through, but we didn’t want to loan him again. He spent last season on loan at Fenerbahce, and it was a complete disaster for everyone.

A deal clearly never materialised, and he stayed at the football club, but now, almost a month after the transfer window has closed, we still haven’t seen him in claret and blue again.

Well, that could be because of the latest news on the Mexican. The 28-year-old midfielder was forced to deny accusations that he was involved in the alleged kidnapping of a movie producer in Mexico.

Juan Jose Lopez Ordonez told Mexican publication TV Notas, that he was forced into a vehicle at gunpoint in Mexico City in 2024 by the family of Alvarez’s former father-in-law, Jonathan Toache Bedolla.

Ordonez, who claims Alvarez was not directly involved in the kidnapping but was aware of the plot, says he was commissioned to make a documentary about the footballer’s life and was owed £150,000 for the project.

The Mexican midfielder was forced to deny this in a statement on social media, but could this be the real reason we haven’t seen Alvarez since that Pompey game?

It’s unclear if he’s been training with the group since that game, but rumours suggest that when the players all returned from their holidays yesterday, Alvarez was among them.

West Ham are obviously stacked in midfield right now and usually only play two in midfield, so is there even space for the 100 times capped Mexico international at West Ham? I guess we’ll find out.
