AS Roma have been linked with an out-of-favour West Ham defender by a top journalist.

Friend of The West Ham Way, Fabrizio Romano has consistently been one of the most reliable journalists in football. His level of inside knowledge is outstanding, especially when it comes to Italian clubs and the insider recently informed CaughtOffside of Jose Mourninho’s need to bring in a reliable centre-back.

Roma have been linked with a number of defenders, including Trevoh Chalobah (who Fabrizio does not believe is in the club’s radar). Interestingly though, he has stated that they could look to sign a legendary Italian defender, or one of West Ham’s fringe players.

“Leonardo Bonucci has been offered to Roma as an opportunity in January,” he revealed, “and as he’d love to go to Euro 2024, playing for Roma would help a lot. However, Roma haven’t decided yet which player they want to sign in that position.”

“Bonucci is available as an option but he’s not the only one, as West Ham’s Thilo Kehrer has also been offered to the Giallorossi.”

It seems like two very different options and, at a glance, you might think that Bonucci would be the one to go for, but when you consider that Kehrer is 9 years younger it puts it into perspective.

Roma have a choice to make: do they go with the experienced leader but get a year or two out of him, or do they go with the younger option who is not currently as good, but may represent better value for money? West Ham will certainly be hoping they go for the latter given their need to raise funds in order to improve their own squad. They will be hoping to make back their £10 million investment on the versatile defender, however they may be forced to sell for less to ensure they make some sort of money.
