West Ham fell apart in the loss to Newcastle with question marks over the call to change the system at a time the side were firmly in control.

Our Hammers were leading 3-1 with 20 minutes remaining, yet a complete implosion from on the pitch and off lead to a 4-3 loss which is significant in our hunt for European football next season.

It was a crucial fixture which a win would have seen West Ham very much in the driving seat to achieve European football for a 4th consecutive season, but there has to be questions raised over the in-game decision making.

David Moyes opted to withdraw Michail Antonio on 70th minute for Kalvin Phillips, to make a change to the system which then turned the tide in the fixture.

Our Podcast co-host and club insider ExWHUEmployee, who was at St James Park, recognised the impact the changes made and feels it was a huge opportunity lost.

“I can’t believe we lost that game,” said a frustrated Ex. “We were in such a comfortable position despite so many decisions going against us.

“The substitution was a crucial moment and whilst it’s accepted now Antonio cannot play beyond the 70th minute now I would have kept the same formation and brought Ings on as it was working.

“The VAR decision on Phillips is harsh and that gave them the turning point they needed but it’s very disappointing how easily we capitulated.”

It is hoped West Ham can draw a line under the result quickly when we host bitter rivals Spurs on Tuesday night, with pressure on to correct the implosion that occurred in a costly loss to the Magpies.
