West Ham have triggered a contract extension for Pablo Fornals, however the view is that the club will look to sell the Spaniard.

Fornals, who joined our Hammers back in 2019 from Spanish side Villarreal in a £24m deal, has seen his playing time significantly reduced in recent months, and it appears the club will be aiming to recoup what was spent 4 years ago.

The midfielders contract at West Ham was due to expire in the summer of 2024, however the club have opted to trigger the 1-year extension to the deal in the hopes to boost a return on the fan-favourite – with an exit looking a possibility in the new year.

Our Podcast co-host and club insider ExWHUEmployee exclusively broke the story yesterday on The West Ham Way Patreon (despite other outlets claiming this), and has since advised that the extension is a strategy for maximum returns when selling the player.

“Whilst it is thought that Fornals could be considering leaving the club,” stated our man-in-the-know. “This should give West Ham a chance to recoup some of the £24 million that we paid in 2019.

“They have exercised the extension in Fornals deal with the view to selling him at some point!”
