Robert Renan’s agent has revealed the truth on rumours that West Ham had agreed a deal for the Brazilian.

Surprising reports from UOL recently stated that West Ham had not only shown interest in signing Robert Renan from Zenit St Petersburg, but they had actually agreed a deal worth £21 million for the defender.

The Hammers have been keeping tabs on the Brazilian market for a while now, with Tim Steidten flying over to South America to try and sign some hidden gems. Unfortunately, nothing came of that in the Summer but that’s not to say he did not come away with a few names to keep an eye on.

Admittedly, the idea that West Ham were interested in Renan (let alone have agreed to sign him for such a significant fee) rang alarm bells for many. He barely starts for Zenit, mostly appearing off the bench.

In fairness, he is only 20 years old but for that fee you’d be expecting him to at least be starting regularly in the Russian league. Even so, the fee seems rather high for that caliber of player he is.

Thankfully, Renan’s agent Luiz Fernando Garcia has provided some much needed clarification on the situation. “It is a lie,” he bluntly told Sport Express

His honesty is appreciated and is a rarity in a time where agents thrive off the attention that transfer rumours can generate for their players. Renan definitely would have been one for the future, but given time to develop, who knows what level he could have reached in Claret and Blue.

Despite a lack of play time, his stats when he has started have been fairly impressive but you do have to ask yourself why he is not involved more in a rather weak league. Maybe he’s just too raw or maybe he’s just not good enough right now, either way he’s one to check in on every now and then. For now though, it doesn’t seem like he will be coming to East London anytime soon.
