West Ham could still sign a highly rated Brazilian defender but they may have to wait a while, according to reports.

The Hammers are looking to secure a fourth consecutive season of European football, but to make this happen West Ham need to bring in some new signings to strengthen their squad. With rumours circling around who they may sign, it has been made clear by our own ExWHUEmployee that the priority is a striker.

However, reports have suggested that West Ham could look to add depth at the other end of the pitch through Robert Renan, a left-footed centre half from Zenit Saint Petersburg who has some impressive stats.

The 20 year old has been playing more consistently for the Russian side this season. His aerial ability has room for improvement, but he more than makes up for it with his tackling.

Recently, a report stating that West Ham had agreed a fee for the Brazilian of around £20 million was debunked by his agent who simply said “it is a lie.”

Now, there has been another twist in the tale with JB (a Brazilian news site) claiming that while reports were far from the truth, the youngster is likely to move to East London. Confusingly, they don’t believe that the move will happen until January 2025 despite claiming he has been “practically sold” to West Ham already.

It seems like this report could hold some merit based on what ExWHUEmployee has said. Ex revealed exclusively on The West Ham Way Patreon that “Tim Steidten is said to be a fan” of Renan’s, but he is only “interested” and that “could mean we revisit the deal at another time.”

Whether that is next January or not remains to be seen, but the fact that there is some truth to these rumours suggests that maybe there is a particular reason the board are waiting to make a move for him.

Whatever that may be, it is probably a good idea we let Renan get some more first team experience before making a move for him. He’s still very raw and needs time to develop, so signing a more finished product could be in our best interest rather than having to iron out his rough edges ourselves.
