West Ham have shown interest in signing Celtic star Matt O’Riley, but they could struggle to compete with some of the other clubs who are after his signature.

In recent years, we have seen the quality of Scottish football rise significantly, specifically Celtic and Rangers. While they may not have the greats like Larsson anymore, the SPFL still is home to some top quality players.

One of the biggest talents in the league currently is Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley. Despite what his name might suggest, O’Riley is actually a Danish international who has improved year after year.

The 23 year old started his career at Fulham, before enjoying a successful spell at MK Dons where he earned his move to Celtic in 2022. The midfielder managed 15 goals and assists in 28 league games in his last campaign – he only needs 1 more to match that already this season.

Unsurprisingly, his impressive form has attracted attention from clubs around Europe. Aston Villa, West Ham, Atletico Madrid, PSV and Inter Milan are all monitoring his situation, according to Sky Sports.

Inter are reportedly the most likely to secure his signature, with them planning on making a move as soon as the January transfer window opens. They seem to have their heart set on O’Riley and want to avoid having to battle with others for his signature.

Given the fact that West Ham are on a limited budget, it is unlikely they will be willing to break Celtic’s record selling fee of £25 million in January. However, if he is somehow still in Scotland at the end of season, he could be a great addition to West Ham’s midfield. It is a position they need to add depth to, but our Irons priorities lie elsewhere in the coming window.
