Millwall have shockingly joined the race for a West Ham star this January, according to reports.

There are very few clubs in the world that share the pure hatred that Millwall and West Ham do. It has always been one of the most hostile, intense and violent derbies in the country.

Surprisingly, the Lions have apparently approached the Hammers for Ben Johnson this January, Football Transfers has reported. The defender’s contract expires at the end of the season and there have been issues in signing a new one. However, he has had a resurgence of sorts in recent weeks and this has led to the club  being eager to get him to put pen to paper.

Unfortunately, the reality is that this may not happen and the board have to make a decision whether to risk losing him on a free in a matter of months, or whether to sell him now.

A number of clubs have shown interest in the defender, and it makes it hard to see why Johnson would join Millwall. Leeds and Southampton are two such teams which are both pushing for promotion, Millwall on the other hand are fighting relegation. Not to mention the fact that he is a boyhood West Ham fan would most likely put him off a move to their rivals.

As we all know, Millwall are not blessed financially so it raises questions about how they would be able to afford the 23 year old’s wages.

From whatever angle you look at it, it is hard to imagine Ben Johnson joining Millwall, Above all else, West Ham are eager to give him a new contract. While there have been stumbling blocks surrounding his play time, his recent form will give encouragement to everyone involved that a resolution can be reached.
