West Ham attempted to sign a highly rated 21-year-old defender on deadline day, according to reports.

Understandably, the entire West Ham fanbase were left disappointed with their January transfer window. In particular, the fact that they let both Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals leave without bringing in a left winger was  extremely unpopular amongst fans.

However, they were not the only outgoings that caused bewilderment, as the club allowed Thilo Kehrer to join Monaco on loan for the rest of the season. Given that they needed to raise transfer funds in order to add depth, it was a weird decision.

Fortunately, it does seem like the club at least tried to bring in a replacement for the German as Football Insider have reported that they made a last ditch effort to sign Arouna Sangante.

The Senegalese centre-back has been a key player to Le Havre’s recent success, and has adapted very well to the step up to Ligue 1. Standing at 6’2 he is slightly shorter than the standard centre-back David Moyes would usually go for, but his potential clearly outweighs those couple of inches.

Unsurprisingly, it was not just the Hammers who were interested in acquiring his services as Nottingham Forest were also said to be keen on signing him. The issue for both club came down to the fact that they wanted a loan where the French outfit were only prepared to sell him permanently.

Financial Fair Play has caused this to be one of, if not the most, quiet windows ever. The fear of being charged with a breach of FFP almost paralysed clubs, leaving them scared of doing business and that is probably the reason that West Ham failed to sign anyone except Kalvin Phillips – at least that seems the case with Sangante.
