West Ham women fought back from a goal down to pick up a point in their WSL meeting against Manchester United at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.

Defender Anouk Denton says the Hammers can be proud of the way they responded in the second half to earn an important point.

Rachel Williams put the Red Devils in front four minutes into the first half, the Hammers were under a lot of pressure from the away side for much of the first half.

Rehanne Skinner’s side came back out for the second half and put in a much more spirited performance. Denton and her teammates’ hard work throughout the second half saw them equalise the tie with five minutes of normal time remaining.

A beautiful West Ham move saw the ball find Viv Asseyi who lobbed the ball over United goalkeeper Mary Earps to make it 1-1 and to secure a positive point for Rehanne Skinner’s side, giving them a six point cushion over bottom placed Bristol City. Speaking to the club’s Official Website after the game, Denton expressed how pleased she was with the team’s response in the second half: “We really came out a lot stronger in the second half.”

Adding: “It’s another really good point for us, another point at home in front of the fans, so we’re pleased we were able to come back.”

The 20 year old defender, who rejoined West Ham in January 2023 having played for the club two years prior, feels her game is progressing in the right direction: “I know that I’ve still got a lot of development still to go and a lot of work to do, but I think playing against top opposition is always a fantastic way to learn.”

The England U23 international went on to discuss how much she is enjoying working under manager Rehanne Skinner: “Rehanne is a fantastic coach, I love how honest she is with all of us. If you’re not in the team she will tell you why and where you need to improve, which I think is good for everyone because you know exactly where you stand and what you need to do to improve.”
