West Ham Women resumed their WSL campaign on Sunday afternoon as they took on Liverpool.

The Hammers went behind on the stroke of halftime when Ceri Holland played the ball to former West Ham player Leanne who finished from close range.

Early into the second half, Liverpool doubled their lead as Missy Bo Kearns headed home at the near post. The hosts made it 3-0 with a little under 20 minutes left to be played thanks to a goal from Sophie Roman Haug.

Riko Ueki took full advantage and pounced on a poor pass from Liverpool goalkeeper Rachel Laws as she made it 3-1 but her goal proved to be nothing more than a consolation for Rehanne Skinner’s side.

Speaking to West Ham TV after the match, manager Rehanne Skinner said there were positives for her side to take into their next game against Chelsea, however there were also improvements that could be made in how the Hammers compete physically.

Skinner said: “I felt that the first goal comes against the run of play. We had a better first half in terms of how we controlled the game than what we have had recently. We’ve been quite slow to start some games, so it was something that we’d really been focusing on.”

The West Ham boss went on to add: “At times in the second half we were a little flat. We were obviously trying to change the energy with the players who were bringing off the bench.

“Liverpool are good at making the game directional, transitional and all of a sudden, you’re in a physical battle for the majority of the game, and I feel like we’ve got to get better at competing with that.”

Looking ahead to the Hammers next game at home against Chelsea, Skinner said: “We’ve been playing well at home recently and making things really difficult for teams.

“The team are determined, we’re working hard every day and we’ll go into the game and do everything we can to get points.”
