West Ham have been handed a massive opportunity to sign a player they failed to bring to East London in January.

The foundations at West Ham are extremely strong. Their first XI is arguably their best in the Premier League era and the whole way the club is run is undergoing positive changes with the addition of Tim Steidten.

Largely, they are at the point where they can add young, exciting prospects that will provide competition and push for a place in the lineup. One such player they’ve shown interest in is Sunderland’s Jack Clarke. The winger has been enjoying a sensational season, scoring 13 goals and assisting 4 in 33 games.

Understandably, the Black Cats were keen to keep hold of their star player but the i’s Mark Douglas has revealed that this is not going to happen. “Sunderland’s refusal to break their wage structure means star forward Jack Clarke will not sign a new contract at the Stadium of Light – news that will put West Ham and other suitors on alert ahead of the summer,” he stated.

“The Black Cats rejected a bid in the region of £13m – with £3.5m in add ons – from Lazio in January for Clarke, who has two years left to run on his current deal. But given Sunderland’s player trading model they may opt to listen to offers for a player who has plenty of Premier League interest in the close season.”

While it is a big leap up to the Premier League, it is a risk that could reap good rewards. 8; he can emulate his exceptional Championship form in the top flight, then the Hammers could have a special player on their hands.
