West Ham are out of the Europa League after drawing with Bayer Leverkusen last night, with the officials performance deemed a key reason for the ultimate loss in the tie.
The 1-1 draw meant that West Ham lost 3-1 on aggregate to the German side, having lost 2-0 in the first encounter at the BayArena the week previous – however it must be said the determination and display from David Moyes’ side last night is one that many will feel proud of.
West Ham were determined from the outset, with the first half performance in particular one of the better displays in recent times by the side, with Leverkusen struggling to contain the energy, which was aided by the outstanding atmosphere created by the Claret & Blue army.
Leading at the break thanks to an Michail Antonio goal gave significant hope that a miracle turnaround was on the cards in east London, however, the side looked leggy in the second period and some very questionable officiating lead Xabi Alonso’s side to level and end all hopes of another European trophy for our Hammers.
The West Ham Way Podcast duo Dave Walker and ExWHUEmployee gave their views on the night, with Walker in particular furious with the referees display, although expressed his pride in the sides determination.
“Proud of the boys tonight,” said Walker. “It’s been one hell of a ride and please god we qualify again this season, because it’s given us fans some unbelievable memories…. Half time changed everything and the referee is a ****!”
Ex also was proud of the club for the performance, and hopes the focus can now be fully on bringing European football here again next season.
“It was a great effort from all of the lads last night against a very good side,” said our club insider. “We were really unlucky not to get the result we needed.
“If shows what a force we can be when all the fans are united and we create an atmosphere like that! It was a great effort all round hopefully we can replicate it for the remainder of the season and get us over the line in the league so this European fairy tale can start again!”
