Julen Lopetegui’s contract with West Ham has an interesting clause which could motivate him to hit the ground running.

Although Julen Lopetegui has already commenced his work at West Ham, he doesn’t officially start until 1st July. However, there are plenty of important discussions to be had and plans to be put in place so he simply could not wait to get things underway.

Some believe that David Moyes’ failure came down to him not being able to plan for the future due to constantly being on a short-term contract, so this has left many to wonder about what sort of deal the Spaniard is on. Surely as the man who has been chosen to take over from the club’s most successful manager in the Premier League era has the full faith of the board to be the long-term solution?

Well, that doesn’t necessarily seem to be the case, according to West Ham Football on X, that depends on how well the first couple of years go. “West Ham have not formally revealed the length of contract of the Hammers new head coach Julen Lopetegui but have confirmed he won’t officially start until 1 July so any work he does in May and June in preparation for the players return from their holidays will be for free,” they stated.

“His initial contract is thought to run for two years until the end of June 2026 but if he qualifies for any European competitions in his first two seasons in charge it will automatically trigger a third year option in his contract keeping him contracted until the end of June 2027.”

While this may not be exactly what fans wanted to hear, this may be more than enough for Lopetegui to plan for the future rather than the now. Everything we’ve heard about him suggests he is a man confident in his ability and, unlike Moyes, is confident that he has what it takes to win every game he heads into.

Securing European football in his first season may be a bit of a stretch, but by his second campaign it has to be the goal so, hopefully, he does enough to earn that automatic extension.
