David Moyes could look to change the playing system at West Ham in the coming season.

For the majority of Moyes’ second stint at the club, the Hammers have typically played 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. However, this may be changing.

It’s no secret that, despite our success last time out in Europe, his side had a difficult campaign in the Premier League. A relegation battle wasn’t something fans had expected but nonetheless the season ended in jubilance, but it’s important that the club recognises their shortcomings and builds upon the strong foundation the team has.

ExWHUEmployee, reporting on Patreon, has exclusively revealed that the manager’s potential solution to this is a change in formation and system. “David Moyes has been experimenting with different formations in training and our preseason games” he confirmed.

He continued to say “3 centre backs, wing backs, 3 in midfield and 2 upfront” is being considered. While Moyes has experimented with 3 centre backs before, it’s usually been when there have been injuries and it’s left him with little choice.

Something he has been reluctant to try previously is a two striker formation and it shows that he is willing to adapt to keep the club moving in the right direction.

“Whilst he obviously hasn’t fully decided upon this and this will depend on who is recruited it is definitely on his mind.” With Carlos Borges looking like a potential signing this summer, it’s hard to say whether he would adapt his system to fit wingers in.

There are of course things Moyes has and will continue to consider, but it’s critical that he factors the way he wants his team to play into the signings he makes.

Maybe a change is just what the Irons need. Maybe we need to start trying new things to keep the club fighting for Europe. With some clever signings, there’s no reason we couldn’t be back where we should be. Let’s hope David Moyes knows exactly what we need once again.
