West Ham today host Champions League chasing Aston Villa at the London Stadium with confidence high after the success in midweek.

David Moyes side overturned a 1-0 deficit against SC Freiburg in the Europa League, by hammering the German side on home soil in fashion, with a 5-0 win to advance again in Europe.

The visitors today meanwhile will be feeling similar no doubt, having beat Ajax 4-0 in the Europa Conference League – although possible absentees today could prove significant.

Villa will be assessing Ollie Watkins after the striker picked up a nasty cut in the midweek win, with many on the Hammers side hoping the in-form hitman will be ruled out.

There will also be hope that Lucas Paqueta and Emerson will be in action today, with Paqueta taken off as a potential precaution against Freiburg while Emerson is working to return from a strain.

The West Ham Way Podcast host Dave Walker has acknowledged that today is set to be a very tough encounter for Moyes’ side, although there is a belief that we can get the result as long as the team remains focused on stopping their obvious threat.

“It’s a tough game today,” stated Walker. “Villa are a good side that will be looking to bounce back from that result against Tottenham.

“They have some obvious threats so defensively we have to be on it. Then it’s a case of taking our chances when we get them and we have more than enough quality to do that.”
