West Ham may start banning fans from renewing their season tickets in order to combat poor attendances.

While almost every West Ham game is sold out, the London Stadium is rarely packed out. This has always been an issue since the move from Upton Park, but it has been noticeably worse since the Moyes debate heated up.

Many blame it on the difficult journey into the stadium, while others blame the overall match day experience in Stratford. What is certain though is that the club needs to do something about the empty seats.

Controversially though, it seems like they could deal with the issue by banning those who attend very few games without re-listing their ticket on the ticket exchange from renewing their season ticket, according to Claret and Hugh.

The West Ham news site reports that an insider said the club are “fed up” with seeing so many empty seats.

“We are not going to renew some season ticket holders who attend very few games and don’t list their seats on the ticket exchange, we are fed up with so many empty seats at games. The season tickets are so cheap some supporters pick and choose their games and it’s a real problem for us.”

Obviously there are many reasons that people can’t attend games, so it is important that they find the right cut off point for those they will not renew. At the same time, you could argue that a paying customer pays to use their seat for whatever games they like and if they don’t attend that’s their choice. Potentially a better way to incentivise season ticket holders to attend the game would be focusing on ways to improve the overall experience of going to the London Stadium to watch football.

Either way, something does have to be done about the number of tickets that are going to waste, you just have to question whether this is the right way to solve the problem.
