West Ham’s uninspired performance leads to 2-0 defeat at home to Fulham.

As we have seen so many times since the turn of the year, West Ham put in a lethargic, frustrating and lacklustre performance against Fulham.

The opening minutes were dominated by the Hammers. They had a few good chances and could have easily taken an early lead. By far the most promising was a save that fell to Antonio who somehow put the ball well over the bar.

Unfortunately, individual mistakes led to the visitors scoring in the 9th minute. A long through ball over the top of West Ham’s back line was dealt with awfully by Mavropanos who practically gifted the goal to Pereira.

As the first-half dragged on, it became increasingly clear who wanted the three points more. Bar Kudus and Fabianski, not a single player looked up for it and this carried throughout the second 45.

In the 72nd minute, Lucas Paqueta (who was having an absolutely woeful game) made a poor mistake that handed possession over to Fulham. Their quick counter attack resulted in Pereira getting his brace and, for many fans, represented the end of their European chase.

Worryingly, the loss was not the most upsetting thing about the game. George Earthy came on as a substitute late into the match and looked not only lively, but like West Ham’s best player. However, just minutes after coming on, disaster struck. Alvarez flew in to get a ball that the youngster was fighting for, hitting him in the process. Earthy crashed to the ground, hitting his head as he fell. It resulted in him falling unconscious and eventually being stretchered off.

While we still do not know the extent of the injury, he is currently in hospital and conscious which is obviously a great sign. We at The West Ham Way are praying that he has a speedy recovery and that we get to see him back on the pitch soon.

Understandably, morale is at a low point amongst the Easy London faithful. They face an uphill battle to secure European football through the league and they will have to come back from 2-0 down against a side who haven’t lost all season if they are to progress in the Europa League. As ever though, you can never count the Irons out. It may take seem improbable, but there is still plenty of football to be played.
