Flynn Downes’ future is up in the air as West Ham and Southampton both keen to have him next season.

Now that it is confirmed there will be a change at the helm next season, there are plenty of unknowns for West Ham United – it’s an exciting feeling. A change of set up, a change of tactics and a change of mindset brings the opportunity for some players to impress who may never have got that under David Moyes.

Obviously everyone is on a clean slate and you’d hope that the next manager, who is likely to be Julen Lopetegui, will give the youth a fair chance too. However, there is one player that fans are desperate to know the fate of and that’s Flynn Downes.

The boyhood West Ham fan never really got much of a chance to show what he’s really about. During his first season at the club he didn’t feature all that often and when he did it was usually in a more advanced role. This season, he’s been on loan at Southampton and has been one of the best players in the Championship.

In an extremely possession based side, he has absolutely dominated the midfield and become a fan favourite amongst the Saints. Understandably, Southampton are desperate to sign him permanently.

Much to their dismay, Football League World reports that Downes may be given a chance to shine under their new gaffer. West Ham would obviously have been considering this anyway, but when Lopetegui has spoken of his fondness of Championship players before they’d be mad not to at least let him have another go at the club he supports.

If he can replicate the form he has found in the Championship when playing in the Premier League, whoever has him on their books could have a sensational player. You’d imagine that a lot of this comes down to whether the Saints get promoted, but even then the ball is fully in our Irons’ court.
