West Ham have been dealt a major blow in their pursuit of a Premier League midfielder.

There are so many obstacles that West Ham must overcome this Summer. They’ve got to bring in a new manager, adapt to a new playing style, sign plenty of players and make sure they fulfill the homegrown quota.

Obviously, the recruitment team has got their work cut out for them. They’re going to have to find some hidden gems in order to make the budget work but, at the same time, they need reliable squad players. You don’t get much more reliable than Josh Brownhill.

The 28-year-old has been one of Burnley’s key players for a number of years now. His experience, versatility and work rates make him an excellent option to have for any club. Every single team needs a few workhorses in their team who are able to steady the ship, and Brownhill is a great example of one.

There had been various reports that West Ham could look to sign him on a free transfer at the end of the season but, unfortunately, this is not going to happen now as, according to Claret and Hugh, Burnley have triggered a one-year automatic extension in his contract.

Realistically, this was always going to be the case. They either keep one of their best players or get some sort of transfer fee for him – it’s a win-win for them. For the Hammers though, it could represent the end of their pursuit as it’s unknown whether they’d be willing to spend crucial funds on him.
